(Tumon, Guam) The Joint Typhoon Warning Center at 10 p.m. (ChST) Monday upgraded Invest 92W to Tropical Depression 26W. The storm as of that time was located 1,346 miles east of Guam, moving west at around 18 mph.
The tropical depression as of last night had maximum sustained winds of 28.7 mph. In our last update on what was Invest 92W, the storm was located over 1,600 miles east of Guam, was moving northwest at 7 mph, and had maximum sustained winds of 18 mph.
26W is expected to be near tropical storm strength this morning, and to reach tropical storm strength some time today. The current track has the center of the storm passing far north of the main islands of the Marianas.
It's still early, so there's no telling whether the storm will veer south as it approaches. Kandit will continue keeping an eye on this development, with fingers crossed the storm will live only atop open waters.
