(Tumon, Guam) Angel Demapan, chief of staff to Gov. Ralph Torres, is very much beholden to Saipan's casinos. When Mr. Demapan ran for Congress last year, the majority of the money he received for his campaign came from the casino industry.
Mr. Demapan's Campaign Financial Disclosure for the 2018 Congressional election include $13,500 in donations from five casino executives and consultants - Mark Brown, Kimberlyn Heinds, Thomas Liu, and Alfred Yue. Mr. Torres's close friend and business associate Ron Li Anderson donated $500; so did Tao Xing from the casino.
Du Young Jang, connected to the casinos, donated $2,000.
Mr. Yue and Mr. Tydingco's wives also donated to the campaign. Liza Yue paid $1,000, and Karen Tydingco paid $500.
Mr. Demapan lost the election to incumbent Congressman Gregorio Kilili Sablan. Mr. Torres made him his chief of staff. This isn't Mr. Demapan's first rodeo with embattled governors. He was chief of staff to former Gov. Benigno Fitial, when Mr. Fitial fled the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the midst of impeachment talks and local prosecution.
