Customs director Ike Peredo was arrested by Airport Police officers, not Guam Police officers, last night following a physical altercation with a female Customs officer.
"The Office of the Attorney General is aware that Ike Peredo was arrested for an incident that occurred last night," attorney general's spokeswoman Carlina Charfauros said. "The OAG has requested police reports related to the incident and is awaiting a response."
Sources within Customs tell Kandit the altercation stemmed from an issue that has been brewing for two weeks.
The female Customs officer two weeks ago had blown the whistle on high-ranking government officials allowing certain incoming passengers to avoid the quarantine screening area through a 'back door.' She then had a disagreement with Mr. Peredo over her reporting of the airport incident, which led to her reprimand by Peredo.
The two argued in the presence of witnesses yesterday, and she began to walk away from the argument. As she turned, witnesses say Mr. Peredo shoved the officer to prevent her from walking out the door.
The governor's office released a statement that Mr. Peredo has been placed on administrative leave, but only after news of the incident broke.
